What we deliver
We are focussed upon developing frameworks for clinical and environmental impact assessments, rapid evidence acquisition, evaluation of environmental impact assessment data, delivery guidance, and a national audit framework for ongoing monitoring of sustainability metrics. We also assess the contextual factors influencing implementation and recommend appropriate adaptations where needed.
We are developing expertise and establishing a self-sustaining centre of excellence for environmentally sustainable healthcare innovation.
Work Programme 01: Deep Dive into Mental Health
The James Hutton Institute is leading a systematic review of the mental healthcare pathway. This will lead to an emissions reduction plan (ERP) and implementation plan.
Work Programme 02: Rapid Action
NHS England’s Getting It Right First Time programme (GIRFT) is developing a methodology for the rapid identification and implementation of decarbonisation measures within healthcare settings.
Work Programme 03: Clinical Trials Outcomes
The University of Exeter is integrating sustainability into clinical trials and observational research, initially focussing on Trauma and Orthopaedics as a model for broader health and social care settings. We will reduce research emissions and incorporate healthcare intervention impacts into study outcomes, aiding decision-making and future modelling.
Cross-cutting themes (CCT)
Cross-cutting themes are in place to ensure that the work programmes do not become siloed. They ensure that staff across the work programmes have strongly connected communication networks and contribute to transdisciplinary working.
Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE)
PPIE is thoroughly embedded within each work programme. This CCT:
- Supports, advises, and connects PPIE activity across the programme.
- Ensures consistency, quality, and equity in how PPIE is delivered and evaluated.
- Ensures that PPIE is a core component of impactful research.
Policy and Geography
Policy and geography co-ordinates four nations policy input across work programmes, contributing to hub deliverables. This CCT:
- Contributes to relevant, evidence-informed, and sustainable policy decisions.
- Co-ordinates contact with NHS organisations, local and national government, and other relevant organisations.
Methods
Methods ensures consistency of approach across all work programmes. This CCT:
- Reviews and recommends specific tools and procedures to collect and analyse emission reduction data, including Life Cycle Assessment.
- Identifies and links appropriate transdisciplinary partners with work programmes.
